The architectural style of Smythehouse originated in New England coastal towns and in Northern New York along the Hudson River flourishing from the 1870's into the 20th century, evolving reactionary to the Queen Ann style, popular earlier in the century, reducing ostentation and rather than standing out from, blending into its surroundings. Ornamentation was reduced on the exterior. Turrets and verandas more fully integrated into the design and details used sparingly. The most important feature is the covering of the entire building with natural shingles.
